01 / THE STORY
History & context
The De Tomaso Pantera Topless is an exceptionally rare and exotic variant of the iconic Italian-American sports car, converted by the Milanese coachbuilder Carrozzeria Pavesi. Originally designed as a mid-engine coupe, the Pantera was a collaboration between De Tomaso and Ford, combining Italian styling with a powerful American V8 engine. While the standard Pantera was already striking, Pavesi’s topless conversion elevated the car’s exclusivity and appeal to a whole new level. Carrozzeria Pavesi took the bold step of transforming the Pantera into a Spider or Targa-style roadster, a conversion that required significant structural reinforcement. Removing the fixed roof compromised the car’s rigidity, so Pavesi engineers added bracing and support to maintain performance and safety. The result was a dramatic open-air driving experience without sacrificing the aggressive performance that made the Pantera famous. Under the hood, the Pavesi-converted Pantera retained the potent 5.8-liter Ford Cleveland V8, typically producing over 300 horsepower. This engine gave the car brutal acceleration and a deep, rumbling soundtrack—made even more visceral with the roof removed. Pavesi also personalized the interiors with custom leather upholstery, updated trim, and often bespoke paint finishes, adding to the car’s bespoke charm. Only a very limited number of these topless Panteras were ever produced, making them one of the rarest and most sought-after variants of the model. Each car is unique, handcrafted for clients who desired something beyond the standard supercar offering of the era. Today, the De Tomaso Pantera Topless by Carrozzeria Pavesi stands as a symbol of individuality, craftsmanship, and the golden era of coachbuilt performance cars. It is a captivating blend of American muscle and Italian artistry, offering collectors a unique piece of automotive history.
