01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Chery LEI was a concept coupé introduced in 2006 as part of a dual design study conducted by the Chinese manufacturer Chery Automobile in partnership with the Italian studio Torino Design. Revealed at the Beijing Motor Show, the LEI was presented alongside a companion SUV concept known as the LUI. The two vehicles were intended to symbolize complementary expressions of design—masculine and feminine—serving as Torino Design’s debut project following its establishment by former Bertone personnel. The LEI’s exterior styling was defined by angular volumes and intersecting planes, producing a profile marked by sharp transitions and an assertive stance. The frontal composition featured a prominent central emblem, from which creases and design elements radiated across the bonnet, headlamps, and side mirrors, establishing a visual hierarchy oriented toward the brand identity. The housing of the windscreen wipers was integrated into the forward section of the bonnet, imparting a distinctive morphological feature. The cabin was visually separated from the bodywork by darkened glazing that extended from the A-pillar to the C-pillar, reinforcing the impression of a floating roof. The rear was characterized by a high tailgate and compressed overhang, contributing to a compact yet muscular form. As with its counterpart, the LEI was presented as a non-functional styling model and lacked a fully developed interior or drivetrain. Its primary purpose was to communicate Chery’s intention to evolve beyond utilitarian design and toward a more expressive, internationally competitive aesthetic language. The LEI also served to establish Torino Design’s design philosophy and technical capabilities within the context of contemporary automotive styling. Though never placed into production, the LEI informed the development of the Chery A6cc, a production-oriented coupé derivative that reached advanced stages of development before cancellation. As such, the LEI stands as an antecedent to Chery’s subsequent design efforts and a representative example of early 21st-century Sino-European cooperation in automotive design. Its existence underscores the transitional nature of Chinese automotive design in this period, moving from imitation toward original expression through external collaboration.
