01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Bugatti ID90 was introduced at the 63rd Turin Motor Show in 1990 as Giorgetto Giugiaro’s first design for the revived Bugatti marque. Created by Italdesign, the ID90 was conceived as a mid-engined two-seat coupé and developed from technical drawings of Bugatti mechanical layouts published in 1989. It served as a design proposal for what would later evolve into the Bugatti EB110. Built as a fully realized prototype, the ID90 emphasized proportions, aerodynamics, and visual balance rather than production feasibility. The concept measured 4,100 millimeters in length and 1,840 millimeters in width, compact by the standards of its class, with dimensions defined to accommodate a mid-mounted twelve-cylinder engine. The body was dominated by a continuous glass canopy, forming a single, flowing curve that integrated seamlessly into the body structure. This design solution provided a panoramic view from the cockpit while establishing a fluid connection between the roofline and the side body contours. The rear section of the glass dome was recessed to accommodate the engine air intakes, following a principle first explored in the 1984 Italdesign Lotus Etna. The ID90 featured a low-slung wedge profile with smooth surfacing and flush detailing characteristic of Italdesign’s late-1980s aesthetic. The wheels, styled with multi-spoke alloy rims, paid homage to the 1926 Bugatti Type 41 Royale, referencing the brand’s heritage through a contemporary lens. Although the car was primarily a styling model, the proposed configuration featured a mid-mounted 3.5-liter V12 engine with four turbochargers and all-wheel drive, echoing the eventual mechanical specification of the EB110. The Bugatti ID90’s structure was designed around advanced composite materials and aerodynamic efficiency, integrating minimal overhangs and an expansive greenhouse. It reflected Italdesign’s experimentation with proportion and surface continuity, serving as both a study in brand identity and a precursor to the production Bugatti EB110 introduced the following year.
