01 / THE STORY

History & context

The BMW 1600 Touring, introduced in 1971, was a three-door fastback variant of the BMW 02 Series, developed during a period of experimentation within BMW’s design strategy. Designed by the renowned Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti, the 1600 Touring marked a departure from the traditional two-door sedan format of the series, offering a more practical and modern silhouette without sacrificing the performance-oriented character for which the 02 Series was known. Michelotti’s design emphasized a sloping rear roofline that ended in a hatchback, a body style that offered increased versatility for luggage and passenger space. This was a novel configuration for BMW at the time, combining the compact dimensions and sporty appeal of the 02 Series with the usability of a hatch. The Touring’s proportions remained tight and well-balanced, with short overhangs, a slightly raised rear deck, and clean side surfaces. The front retained the familiar dual kidney grilles and round headlamp configuration, maintaining visual continuity with other BMW models of the era. Under the hood, the 1600 Touring featured BMW’s 1.6-liter M10 inline-four engine, producing approximately 85 horsepower. The engine was paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, sending power to the rear wheels. The mechanical layout and performance were in line with the standard 1600 two-door sedan, ensuring that the Touring variant retained the series’ engaging driving dynamics and nimble handling. Despite its appealing blend of style and utility, the BMW 1600 Touring did not achieve significant commercial success. Factors such as its unconventional shape for the time, limited market appetite for hatchbacks in certain regions, and internal competition from other BMW models contributed to its relatively short production run. The model was discontinued by 1974, with fewer units produced compared to its sedan counterpart. The BMW 1600 Touring remains a distinctive and rare expression of the brand’s early 1970s design language. It reflects BMW’s willingness to explore new body styles and Michelotti’s ability to reinterpret familiar platforms with a fresh perspective, blending Italian flair with German engineering discipline.
