THE STORY

Overview

Locati & Torretta was among the pioneering coachbuilders of Turin, producing luxury horse-drawn carriages before adapting to the emerging automobile. The Turin historical chronology records a company operating under the name Società Anonima Carrozzerie Italiane di Locati e Torretta in 1884. That date documents an early corporate form, not necessarily the beginning of the workshop’s activity.

According to the Automobile Club Torino’s historical account, Locati & Torretta built the body of the Lanza-Martina, regarded as the first automobile to circulate in Turin in 1895. The firm subsequently bodied other cars for Michele Lanza, supplied fifty Fiat-based postal vans in 1909 and produced prestigious coachwork including an Itala presented to the Pope. Its production ended with the outbreak of the First World War.
