01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Moretti Multipla Mare was a unique version of the Fiat Multipla, created by the Italian manufacturer and coachbuilder Moretti between 1958 and 1961. Moretti, known for producing small batches of modified Fiat vehicles, aimed to cater to specific needs and lifestyles, and the Multipla Mare was designed for the sunny coastal regions where people sought a car suited for beach trips and leisure activities. With an average production volume of about 1,500 cars annually, Moretti specialized in making special versions of popular models, and the Multipla Mare stood out as one of their most distinctive creations. The Fiat Multipla itself was a groundbreaking design, offering ample interior space in a compact form. It was practical, especially for families, with flexible seating arrangements and a functional layout. Moretti took this already innovative car and added its own touches to create a version designed specifically for those living by the sea or frequently visiting beach towns. The Moretti Multipla Mare retained the original Multipla’s practical features but included modifications that made it more suited to the outdoor, beach lifestyle. One of the most notable changes was the open-air design. Moretti removed the roof and incorporated a foldable soft top, allowing passengers to enjoy the sun and breeze during coastal drives. The interior was adapted with materials that were weather-resistant and easy to clean, such as vinyl seats and durable surfaces, making it perfect for a car that would spend a lot of time in the sun and sand. The Multipla Mare’s combination of practicality and style made it an ideal vehicle for leisure activities and quick trips to the beach. Though only a small number were produced, the Moretti Multipla Mare remains a memorable example of how a small manufacturer could create a vehicle that appealed to a very specific lifestyle, catering to those who wanted both functionality and a touch of fun in their daily drives.
