01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Cabriolet Ministeriale was a formal open car built in 1950 by Carrozzeria Boneschi on the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 chassis. Unlike the more sporting cabriolets and coupés normally associated with the 6C line, this version was conceived as a large representative automobile, intended for official use, ceremonies and high-ranking passengers. The designation Ministeriale reflected its function. The body was longer and more formal than a standard two-door cabriolet, with four doors, a spacious passenger compartment and an open roof layout suitable for public appearances. The car retained the prestige of Alfa Romeo’s final pre-war-derived six-cylinder chassis, but Boneschi gave it a more dignified and institutional character. The design was clean and restrained. The front end used the traditional Alfa Romeo shield grille, flanked by round headlamps and broad lower air intakes. The bonnet was long and simple, while the sides were almost completely smooth, interrupted only by thin chrome trim and the door handles. The rear section was extended and squared-off compared with sportier 6C 2500 bodies, giving the car greater visual length and a more official presence. The open cabin was arranged for comfort rather than speed. The rear passenger area was generous, with a folding soft top, full side windows and a high level of trim. The dark exterior finish, red interior and formal proportions gave the car the appearance of a state or diplomatic vehicle. Mechanically, the car was based on the proven Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 platform, using the marque’s inline-six engine and conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. By 1950, the 6C 2500 was near the end of its production life, but it remained one of the most prestigious Italian chassis available for bespoke coachwork. The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Cabriolet Ministeriale by Boneschi is significant as a rare postwar example of Italian representative coachbuilding. It shows Boneschi working not on a sporting special, but on a formal, official open car built around presence, comfort and ceremonial use.At the end of the conflict, the 6C 2500 model is re-proposed almost unchanged and it is still the external carriages that sanction its glory: Touring, Pininfarina, Stabilimenti Farina, Bertone, Boneschi, Viotti, Castagna, Ghia, are just some of the great names of the style who sign masterpieces on this chassis.
