01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 525 SS Coupé Royal, a one-off creation by Pininfarina, was a car built for Prince Alighiero Giovannelli and is celebrated as one of the finest examples of automotive elegance from the early 20th century. This luxurious coupé not only symbolized the pinnacle of bespoke design but also showcased the technical prowess of Fiat and the visionary creativity of Pininfarina. In 1931, it achieved great acclaim by winning the first prize at the prestigious Rome Concorso d’Eleganza, further solidifying its place in automotive history. Based on the Fiat 525 Super Sport chassis, the 525 SS Coupé Royal was equipped with a 3.7-liter inline-six engine, known for providing strong performance and a smooth driving experience. This model was part of Fiat’s lineup during a period when the company was aiming to attract high-end clientele who desired not only performance but also exceptional luxury. The “SS” designation stood for Super Sport, indicating the car’s more powerful engine configuration and improved suspension setup, making it ideal for grand touring. What truly set this one-off car apart, however, was its bespoke bodywork crafted by the renowned coachbuilder Pininfarina. For Prince Giovannelli, Pininfarina created a car that was both regal and sophisticated, reflecting the prince’s status and refined taste. The Coupé Royal featured graceful, flowing lines, a long hood, and an elegant roofline that seamlessly blended the sporty characteristics of the Super Sport chassis with the stately presence of a royal automobile. The attention to detail, from the intricately designed grille to the lavish interior appointments, underscored the exclusivity of this vehicle. When the Fiat 525 SS Coupé Royal won the first prize at the Rome Concorso d’Eleganza in 1931, it was a testament to Pininfarina’s unparalleled design excellence and Fiat’s ability to create technically advanced, luxurious automobiles. This car remains a historic masterpiece, embodying the glamour and sophistication of its era.
