01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo Dardo was a concept roadster designed by Pininfarina and unveiled in 1998. The design was based on the Alfa Romeo 156 platform and created as a tribute to decades of collaboration between Alfa Romeo and Pininfarina in the design of open sports cars. The name “Dardo,” meaning “dart” in Italian, reflected both the vehicle’s sharp styling and its dynamic intent. The Dardo was equipped with the 2.5-litre V6 engine from the Alfa Romeo 156, a 60-degree, 24-valve unit with a displacement of 2,492 cc. It produced approximately 190 hp at 6,200 rpm and 223 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm. Power was delivered to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. The chassis retained the 156’s independent suspension layout with MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link system at the rear, tuned for a lighter and more agile configuration. Braking was provided by ventilated discs on all four wheels. The car measured approximately 4,380 mm in length, 1,709 mm in width, and 1,250 mm in height, with a wheelbase slightly shorter than that of the 156 at 2,550 mm. Curb weight was around 1,200 kg. The structural layout was a steel monocoque derived from the 156 with reinforcement adapted for the open-top configuration. Stylistically, the Dardo emphasized triangular geometric themes on its flanks and tail section. The bodywork incorporated smooth, tapering surfaces and a distinctive front fascia with twin circular headlights developed in collaboration with Valeo. The cockpit reused the 156 dashboard, trimmed in leather matching the seat upholstery. Pininfarina partnered with Sparco to design the seats, featuring carbon–Kevlar–carbon composite shells and integrated four-point harnesses. The Alfa Romeo Dardo represented a fully functional prototype combining 156 mechanicals with Pininfarina’s experimental open-body design and was presented as a working roadster concept rather than a static display model.
