01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Moretti 750 TDM Quattro Usi was introduced in 1958 as part of Moretti’s expansion of its 750-based range toward compact multipurpose vehicles. The body was designed by Giovanni Michelotti and built by Moretti, reflecting a collaboration between one of Italy’s most prolific designers and a small-scale manufacturer specializing in refined derivatives of Fiat mechanicals. The designation “Quattro Usi” referred explicitly to the car’s four intended functions, as illustrated in contemporary brochures. Conceived as a four-door berlina with five seats, the 750 TDM featured a rear door hinged at the bottom and opening upward, allowing the vehicle to alternate between family transport, luggage carrier, light commercial use, and mixed passenger–cargo operation. Period drawings emphasized the adaptability of the interior, showing multiple seating and load configurations achieved with minimal effort. This concept anticipated later European interpretations of the compact multipurpose car. Michelotti’s design balanced utility with restraint. The body adopted upright proportions, a long roofline, and a large glazed area to maximize interior light and visibility. The extended rear quarter window and near-vertical tail signaled load capacity without resorting to overt commercial styling. Surface treatment was clean and rational, consistent with Michelotti’s approach to functional vehicles of the period, while maintaining a coherent, passenger-car appearance. Mechanically, the 750 TDM was based on Fiat-derived components, using a front-mounted 750 cc inline-four engine driving the rear wheels. Lightweight construction and modest power output suited urban and regional use, with an emphasis on efficiency and reliability. Suspension and braking systems followed contemporary small-car practice and were calibrated to accommodate variable loads. Factory literature highlighted practicality, versatility, and low operating costs, positioning the 750 TDM as an alternative to both conventional saloons and small vans. Production remained limited, consistent with Moretti’s artisanal scale. Surviving examples are rare and documented primarily in private collections and specialist archives, where the 750 TDM Quattro Usi is recognized as an early and coherent expression of Michelotti’s functional design language applied to a compact Italian multipurpose vehicle.
