01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Michelotti Clas, a running prototype developed in 1986, was an innovative concept car that showcased Giovanni Michelotti‘s vision for a future light sports car. Built using components from the Toyota MR2, the Clas was designed as a compact yet versatile sports vehicle that combined style, practicality, and performance. With a 1600cc engine, the car offered a spirited driving experience, while also maintaining a functional design. One of the notable features of the Michelotti Clas was its thoughtful use of space. Despite its relatively small size, the car provided ample storage with front and rear baggage compartments. Additionally, there was a space behind the seats, further increasing the vehicle’s practicality. The rear seats, however, were intended for emergency use only, suitable for passengers no taller than 5’6″. This design choice allowed for a sporty, two-seater driving experience with just enough room for additional passengers when needed. The aerodynamic design of the Clas was both functional and striking. Scoops integrated into the C-pillar were used to cool the engine, contributing to the vehicle’s efficient performance while adding a visual flair. The headlights were mounted high on the nose, a design detail that further enhanced the car’s forward-looking, sporty aesthetic. Inside the Clas, Michelotti kept the interior style refined but unflashy. The seats were upholstered in wool, adding a touch of warmth and comfort to the car’s cabin, and the dashboard was finished in tweed cloth, creating a cozy atmosphere for the occupants. While the design didn’t focus on extreme styling themes, it offered practicality and sophistication. The center console and satellite switches were taken from the MR2, while climate and ventilation controls came from Lancia models, ensuring a high level of functionality. Analog instruments behind the wheel kept the driver connected to the car’s mechanical performance, completing the experience. Overall, the Michelotti Clas was a forward-thinking sports car prototype that combined practicality, style, and performance, exemplifying Michelotti’s design expertise.
