01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Michelotti PAC (Project Automotive Commuter), based on the Daihatsu Cuore, stands as one of Michelotti‘s most successful city car concepts. Designed with a focus on creating a small, rational, and versatile vehicle for urban use, the PAC embodied the vision of renowned designer Giovanni Michelotti, who sought to address the growing demand for economical and practical transportation in cities. One of the standout features of the Michelotti PAC was its modular design. This allowed the car to be easily adapted into different versions while using the same structural base. The modular approach simplified production, making it an efficient solution for manufacturers looking to offer a variety of options without the need for entirely new platforms. This flexibility made the PAC a practical choice for a broad range of markets and user needs, from basic commuting vehicles to more feature-rich versions. Under the hood, the PAC was powered by a two-cylinder 548cc engine. To reduce vibrations and ensure smoother operation, the engine featured a countershaft, an innovative design element that helped improve the overall driving experience. Despite its small size, the engine gave the PAC a top speed of 70 mph, making it a capable choice for city commutes and short-distance travel. The Michelotti PAC’s compact size, modular construction, and efficient engine combined to create a car that was perfectly suited to urban environments. Its practicality, low cost, and versatility were in line with Michelotti’s vision for a vehicle that could meet the demands of everyday city driving. Although the PAC was ultimately a concept and did not reach widespread production, it remains a significant achievement in small car design, illustrating Michelotti’s ability to blend innovation with practicality in urban mobility.
