01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Hyundai Presto was a compact sedan produced between 1985 and 1989, primarily for the South Korean domestic market. It was based on the first-generation Hyundai Excel (X1) platform and was essentially the four-door sedan counterpart to the hatchback models sold internationally. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, the Presto featured clean, angular lines typical of mid-1980s automotive styling. Mechanically, the Presto shared its underpinnings with the Mitsubishi Mirage, utilizing front-wheel drive and a transverse engine layout. Engine options included 1.3- and 1.5-litre inline-four petrol engines, producing between 67 and 72 horsepower. Transmission choices comprised a four- or five-speed manual gearbox and a three-speed automatic. The vehicle’s performance was modest, with a 0100 km/h acceleration time of approximately 14 seconds and a top speed around 150 km/h. The Presto’s interior was functional, offering seating for five and a straightforward dashboard layout. Standard equipment was minimal, reflecting its positioning as an affordable family car. However, its reliability and low running costs made it popular among budget-conscious consumers. Fuel consumption averaged around 6.5 litres per 100 km, providing a range of approximately 600 km on a full 40-litre tank. While the Presto was not widely exported under its original name, it was sold in some markets as the Hyundai Excel sedan or, in the United States, as the Mitsubishi Precis. Its production continued until 1994, when it was succeeded by the Hyundai Accent. The Presto played a significant role in establishing Hyundai’s reputation for producing economical and reliable vehicles, contributing to the brand’s global expansion in the late 20th century.
