01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Proton EMAS Country was a concept vehicle developed as part of the EMAS (Eco Mobility Advanced Solution) program by Proton Holdings in cooperation with Italdesign Giugiaro. It was introduced to the public at the 2010 Geneva International Motor Show. The EMAS initiative encompassed a series of compact hybrid vehicles, including the EMAS Country, EMAS Comfort, and EMAS3 City, each presenting a distinct variation of the same modular architecture. The EMAS Country was configured as a three-door compact crossover with raised ride height and exterior modifications to suggest light off-road capability. It measured approximately 3,555 mm in length, 1,699 mm in width, and 1,576 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,590 mm. The platform was engineered to maximize interior volume within limited external dimensions, enabling accommodation for five passengers. The visual design emphasized utility and urban functionality, incorporating protective lower body cladding, roof rails, and a slightly elevated stance. The powertrain was a plug-in hybrid configuration developed in conjunction with Lotus Engineering. It combined a 1.2-liter three-cylinder internal combustion engine, functioning as a range extender, with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack with a capacity of 16.5 kWh. The system produced a total output of approximately 75 kW (100 horsepower) and 240 Nm of torque. The EMAS Country was designed to reach a top speed of 170 km/h, with an acceleration figure of 0–100 km/h in 14 seconds. The total range, combining battery power and internal combustion operation, was estimated at 563 kilometers, with carbon dioxide emissions rated at approximately 60 grams per kilometer. Interior design emphasized space efficiency and digital instrumentation. Materials and layout were oriented toward urban mobility, with flexible seating and integrated infotainment systems. Although the Proton EMAS Country was presented with the intention of entering production by 2012, the program did not proceed beyond the concept stage. Factors contributing to its cancellation included the cost of hybrid technology development and market readiness. The EMAS Country remains a conceptual exercise in hybrid compact crossover design, emblematic of early efforts by Southeast Asian manufacturers to adopt electrified propulsion systems within globally recognizable design frameworks.
