01 / THE STORY

History & context

The De Tomaso Vallelunga Fissore, first unveiled as a concept car at the 1964 Turin Motor Show, represents a fascinating chapter in automotive history. The vehicle, which was part of De Tomaso’s ambitious project, was initially intended to be sold to another car manufacturer, with Ford being a primary target. However, when no automaker showed interest in acquiring the Vallelunga project, De Tomaso opted to finance its development independently. The production of the Vallelunga was eventually handed over to Ghia, while the design work was executed by the Fissore bodywork company. This division of labor was marked by a notable incident that stirred controversy within the industry. When the De Tomaso Vallelunga was presented at the Turin Motor Show in 1964, it was showcased under Fissore’s name, highlighting the design prowess of the Fissore bodywork. However, the following year, the Vallelunga was displayed again, this time at the Ghia stand, with no significant changes in dimensions or styling from its initial presentation. This repetition caused considerable dissatisfaction for Mario Fissore, the head of Fissore’s technical office. Seeing his design showcased under a competing brand’s banner undoubtedly felt like an oversight, given the design and styling work was attributed to Fissore. Despite the internal conflict over its branding, the De Tomaso Vallelunga remains a significant automotive concept. Its design by Fissore, coupled with its eventual production by Ghia, reflects the innovative spirit of the 1960s and highlights the complex interplay of design and manufacturing in the automotive world. The Vallelunga’s unique place in automotive history continues to be a point of interest for enthusiasts and historians alike.
