01 / THE STORY

History & context

The TVR Tina Spyder was unveiled in November 1966 at the renowned Turin Motor Show, capturing attention with its unique blend of British engineering and Italian craftsmanship. Based on the Hillman Imp, the car adhered to TVR’s signature approach of utilizing components from “donor” vehicles, a practice that earned the company its early reputation for producing kit cars. This particular model was a 2+2 convertible sports car designed by the talented Trevor Fiore, whose vision lent the car a distinctive and modern aesthetic. The body shell was constructed by Carrozzeria Fissore in Italy, adding a touch of European sophistication. Unlike TVR’s usual fiberglass construction, the prototype of the Tina Spyder featured a steel body. This choice was purely practical for the prototype stage, as TVR lacked the capacity for steel body pressing. Had the Tina progressed to production, it was likely that reinforced fiberglass would have been used, staying true to the company’s typical manufacturing methods. The Tina Spyder presented at the Turin Motor Show was actually the second iteration of the model. Its front design had been revised to meet U.S. safety regulations, showcasing TVR’s forward-thinking approach and ambition to expand into international markets. This redesign demonstrated the company’s ability to adapt its vision to meet the evolving demands of the automotive industry. Despite its stylish design, innovative spirit, and the potential to diversify TVR’s lineup, the TVR Tina Spyder never advanced beyond the prototype stage. While it did not reach production, the car remains a fascinating chapter in TVR’s history, highlighting the brand’s willingness to experiment and push boundaries during the 1960s. The Tina Spyder serves as a symbol of TVR’s adventurous ethos and its ability to combine practicality with creativity. Though it never made it to the open road, the Tina remains a testament to TVR’s ambition and the cross-cultural collaboration between British ingenuity and Italian artistry.
