01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Volvo P1800 by Carrozzeria Fissore is a singular example of mid-20th-century automotive design experimentation, realized in 1965 as a one-off prototype. Commissioned by Motauto, the official importer of Volvo automobiles for the Italian market, the project aimed to reinterpret the Swedish manufacturer’s grand touring coupé through the lens of Italian design sensibility. Carrozzeria Fissore, based in Savigliano and known for a restrained, formalist design language, was entrusted with the task. Derived from the existing Volvo P1800 platform, the Fissore prototype retained the mechanical underpinnings of the standard model, including the 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and rear-wheel-drive layout. The transformation was aesthetic rather than technical, with the bodywork reimagined to reflect a sharper, more linear form. The most pronounced modification was found in the rear section of the car, where a fastback profile replaced the original’s concave rear window and pontoon-like tail. The roofline was extended and allowed to descend more fluidly into a truncated tail, forming a cohesive volume in keeping with continental fastback design idioms of the period. At the front, Fissore maintained fidelity to Volvo’s brand identity while introducing subtler forms, including reprofiled headlamp surrounds and a simplified grille treatment. Side apertures were reconfigured, and the greenhouse appeared narrower and more angular, providing a visual contrast to the rounded forms of the production P1800. The effect was one of increased visual tautness and a shift toward architectural clarity. Presented at the 1965 Salone dell’Automobile di Torino, the Fissore-bodied P1800 remained a concept, never advancing to serial production. Volvo, having already found market acceptance with the standard P1800—designed by Pelle Petterson and built initially by Jensen Motors—elected not to deviate from its established formula. The Volvo P1800 GT Fissore endures as a document of cross-cultural automotive collaboration. It illustrates a moment in which Northern engineering and Southern formality converged, without the pressures of market demand or production feasibility. As such, it is remembered not for commercial impact but for its speculative nature—a reflection of what might have been had industrial logic yielded to stylistic exploration.
