01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Monteverdi Sierra Cabriolet made its grand debut at the prestigious Geneva Motor Show in 1978, captivating audiences with its blend of luxury, style, and innovation. As a convertible iteration of the Sierra, Monteverdi ventured into uncharted territory, crafting a four-seater luxury convertible that stood out amidst its competitors. Based on the shortened chassis of the Dodge Aspen Coupé, the Sierra Cabriolet embodied Monteverdi’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and engineering. With a sale price set at CHF 89,000, it positioned itself as a formidable contender in the luxury convertible market, with the Rolls-Royce Corniche being its closest competitor, albeit significantly more expensive. Despite the absence of direct rivals in its class, the Sierra Cabriolet faced challenges in achieving the anticipated success. Only two examples were completed by Carrozzeria Fissore, highlighting the exclusivity and rarity of this remarkable vehicle. One was finished in a vibrant red hue and found its way into the hands of the Swiss publisher Frey, while the other, adorned in a sophisticated silver color, remained within the confines of the factory. Today, both vehicles continue to exist, each carrying with it a unique story and legacy. The silver-colored Sierra Cabriolet now resides proudly in the Monteverdi Museum in Binningen, serving as a testament to the brand’s heritage and craftsmanship. Meanwhile, the red Sierra Cabriolet embarked on a new journey after being sold in 2006, preserving its place in automotive history. Despite its limited production run and modest commercial success, the Monteverdi Sierra Cabriolet remains an icon of luxury and sophistication. Its enduring presence serves as a reminder of Monteverdi’s pursuit of excellence and its enduring legacy in the world of high-end automobiles.
