01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat Panda Penny was a small utility vehicle developed by Carrozzeria Fissore in the early 1980s, based on the first-generation Fiat Panda. Conceived as a compact and versatile pickup, the Penny was aimed at meeting the transportation needs of tradespeople, small businesses, and rural users within the limited dimensions and economy of a city car. It stands as one of the more distinctive derivatives of the Panda platform, exemplifying the adaptability of the base model and the ingenuity of Italian coachbuilders in tailoring vehicles for niche markets. Retaining the front section of the standard Panda, the Penny preserved the original flat bonnet, rectangular headlamps, and grille layout. The modifications began behind the front seats, where the original hatchback bodywork was replaced with an open cargo bed. This rear section featured flat panels, integrated wheel arches, and was typically topped with a removable canvas cover supported by a light tubular frame. The cargo area was small, yet functional, and could carry tools, goods, or light agricultural loads. Reinforcements were made to the rear structure and suspension to improve load-bearing capability while maintaining the car’s compact footprint and ease of maneuverability. Inside, the Panda Penny followed the minimalist approach of the donor car. The interior was practical, with basic instrumentation and durable materials designed for utility rather than comfort. Mechanically, it was equipped with Fiat’s 903 cc inline-four engine, a reliable and efficient power unit mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Power was delivered to the front wheels, as per the standard Panda, providing adequate performance for short-distance and low-speed tasks. Production of the Fiat Panda Penny was limited, and it was marketed primarily in the Italian domestic market. It never entered mainstream production but served as a coachbuilt solution for customers needing more cargo flexibility without stepping up to a full-size commercial vehicle. As a result, it remains a rare variant today, valued among collectors for its uniqueness and as a representative of a period when coachbuilders like Fissore continued to explore functional reinterpretations of mass-market vehicles.
