01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Serenissima 308 Jet Competizione is a singular prototype developed in 1965 by Automobili Serenissima, an Italian marque established by Count Giovanni Volpi di Misurata. Intended as a competitive entry in endurance racing, the vehicle embodies the technical ambition and aesthetic innovation characteristic of small, independent constructors operating in the 1960s motorsport environment. Though ultimately short-lived in competition, the car represents a notable intersection of experimental engineering and artisanal coachbuilding. The vehicle’s development was overseen by engineer Alberto Massimino and stylist Francesco Salomone. At its core lies the Serenissima M166 engine, a 3.0-liter V8 unit mounted longitudinally in a mid-engine configuration. This engine, capable of producing approximately 307 horsepower at 8,500 revolutions per minute, was mated to a Colotti-Francis T32 five-speed manual transmission. The chassis consisted of a steel spaceframe clothed in a lightweight aluminum body fabricated by Carrozzeria Fantuzzi, yielding a curb weight near 850 kilograms. The suspension employed double wishbones with coil springs over dampers, accompanied by disc brakes at all four corners. The 308 Jet Competizione’s exterior reflected the aerodynamic conventions of its time, with a low-slung silhouette and pronounced rear haunches. These design elements echoed contemporaneous endurance racers, such as the Ferrari 250 LM, yet retained an individual character through details unique to the Serenissima marque. The vehicle participated in the official test sessions for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in April 1966, where its lap times demonstrated competitive potential, though it did not appear in the race itself. The M166 engine later attained further historical significance through its use in the McLaren M2B Formula One car, contributing to the team’s first point in the World Championship. Following its brief competitive tenure, the Serenissima 308 Jet Competizione was withdrawn from racing activities and subsequently preserved. Its reemergence in restored form at the 2006 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este brought renewed attention to the machine as an exemplar of 1960s privateer innovation. As a unique, hand-built prototype, it remains a testament to the era’s blend of mechanical ingenuity and stylistic experimentation.
