01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Boneschi Cabriolet was a rare coachbuilt open car produced by Carrozzeria Boneschi of Milan on the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 chassis. Although the 6C 2500 was bodied by several Italian coachbuilders, most surviving examples are associated with Pinin Farina and Touring. Boneschi’s interpretation was far less common: only three examples are known to have been built. The three chassis associated with this small series are 916.427, 916.428, and 916.446. Today, only one example is known to survive. This car is currently in Brazil and has received several awards at concours d’elegance events, confirming both its rarity and the quality of its restoration and preservation. The Boneschi cabriolet was presented in 1950, appearing at both the Geneva Motor Show and the Frankfurt Motor Show. Its design reflected the elegant postwar direction of Italian coachbuilding, while still retaining some formal pre-war proportions. The long bonnet, upright Alfa Romeo shield grille, separate round headlamps and wide horizontal lower intakes gave the front a strong and prestigious appearance. The sides were clean and elongated, with restrained chrome trim, a low beltline and a generous rear deck. Compared with more familiar 6C 2500 bodies, the Boneschi version had a distinctive character. The cabriolet body was broad, elegant and formal, with a large open cabin, wire wheels, whitewall tyres and a neatly folded soft top. The rear section was rounded and smooth, giving the car a refined grand touring profile rather than a purely sporting one. The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Boneschi Cabriolet is significant because it represents one of the rarest postwar interpretations of Alfa Romeo’s final 6C series. Built in extremely limited numbers, shown at major European motor shows, and surviving today in only one known example, it is an important piece of Boneschi’s postwar coachbuilding history.
