01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 1400 Super Cabriolet Boneschi was a small-series open car built by Carrozzeria Boneschi of Milan on the Fiat 1400 platform. Presented in 1950, it represented one of the most elegant coachbuilt interpretations of Fiat’s first postwar monocoque model. The base car, the Fiat 1400, was important in its own right. It introduced a modern structure, contemporary proportions and a new level of comfort for Fiat’s medium-class range. Boneschi used this modern platform to create a more exclusive cabriolet, aimed at clients who wanted the reliability and practicality of Fiat mechanicals with the finish and individuality of a Milanese coachbuilder. The design was long, low and clean, with smooth sides, a generous rear section and restrained chrome detailing. The front retained the Fiat 1400 identity, but the body was made more refined through the wider horizontal grille, elegant bumper treatment and carefully integrated wings. The open bodywork gave the car a more glamorous character, while the rear deck was extended and softly rounded, creating a relaxed grand touring profile rather than a purely sporting one. One of its most distinctive details was the special windscreen with double porthole-style openings, a rare feature that gave the car a highly recognisable appearance. The cabin was open and elegant, with space for comfortable touring, while the hood folded behind the seats under a clean rear cover. The Fiat 1400 Super Cabriolet Boneschi was shown at the 1950 Turin Motor Show. That same year, it also appeared at major Italian elegance events, winning Best of Show and its class at the Concorso d’Eleganza di Venezia, and taking a class win at the Concorso di Roma al Pincio. Built only in small numbers, the 1400 Super Cabriolet Boneschi shows how postwar Italian coachbuilders could transform a production Fiat into a refined, limited-production automobile. It combined modern Fiat engineering with Boneschi’s taste for elegance, special detailing and carefully executed custom bodywork.
Historical research note
A 1950 Boneschi-bodied Fiat 1400 convertible is independently documented, including a Lido di Venezia award and later screen appearance in Belle ma povere. The exact chassis remains unresolved, and the specific name 'Super Cabriolet' is retained primarily as CI nomenclature.
