01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8C Monterosa Cabriolet by Carrozzeria Boneschi was a unique coachbuilt automobile constructed in 1948 on the postwar Tipo 8C platform. The model was part of a short-lived attempt by Isotta Fraschini to reestablish itself as a manufacturer of high-end passenger vehicles after the Second World War. Development of the 8C Monterosa commenced in 1945 and concluded by 1949, with a total of four to six rolling chassis completed. The project did not advance to series production. The Tipo 8C Monterosa employed a tubular steel ladder-type frame with a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. The power unit was a rear-mounted V8, designed by Aurelio Lampredi. Displacement varied by prototype, with sources indicating 2.5, 3.0, and 3.4-litre configurations. The engine featured overhead valves and was air-cooled, though later versions may have included water cooling. Output for the 3.0-litre variant was approximately 115 horsepower, delivered through a four- or five-speed manual gearbox integrated into the rear transaxle. Suspension was independent on all four wheels, utilizing wishbones at the front and swing axles at the rear. Braking was provided by hydraulic drums at each wheel. The cabriolet body by Boneschi was constructed in aluminum and configured as a six-seat open tourer. The styling was characterized by enclosed rear wheels, a low beltline, minimal chrome ornamentation, and concealed door handles. The convertible roof was fabric, folding manually into a recessed compartment. Design emphasis was placed on aerodynamic fluidity and restrained elegance, in contrast with prewar formal coachbuilding conventions. Only one cabriolet body by Boneschi was completed on the 8C Monterosa chassis. It was presented at the 1948 Paris Salon and subsequently shown at Geneva and Villa d’Este. The vehicle was later acquired by the Lopresto Collection and remains in restored condition. No publicly confirmed chassis number is associated with the car in official archives. The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8C Monterosa Cabriolet by Boneschi is one of the final expressions of Italian bespoke coachbuilding applied to an experimental luxury chassis. As the only open version constructed on the Monterosa platform, it occupies a singular position in postwar Italian automotive history.
