01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat Topolino Top. J is a one-off four-seat interpretation of the electric Fiat Topolino created by GFG Style in collaboration with Fabrizio Giugiaro and Lapo Elkann. Presented at Salone Auto Torino on 11 September 2026, it was developed alongside the two-seat Top. L as one of the first projects resulting from the collaboration between Giugiaro and Elkann. Although both cars use the same Fiat Topolino starting point, Top. J follows a radically different concept centred on sociability, unconventional packaging and historical references. Its most distinctive feature is its four-seat configuration. Despite the Topolino measuring less than three metres in length, GFG Style created an arrangement in which four occupants sit back-to-back. The modification transforms the small urban vehicle into an unusual open leisure car while retaining the compact proportions of the original model. Top. J also dispenses with a conventional fixed roof. Instead, a lightweight fabric canopy provides protection from sun and rain while preserving the open character of the design. The car’s blue-and-green colour scheme has a direct connection with the Agnelli family’s automotive history. According to GFG Style, the livery was inspired by the Ferrari 166 MM once owned by Gianni Agnelli, Lapo Elkann’s grandfather. The colours also pay tribute to Umberto Agnelli, who was known for personalising his cars with details in blue and green. Inside, GFG Style continued this theme through an unconventional combination of terry cloth and leather, again using shades of blue and green. The intention was to create an interior that felt informal and playful while retaining the level of detail expected from a bespoke one-off. The letter “J” stands for “Joy,” while the companion Top. L represents “Love.” According to Elkann, both names reflect the emotional approach behind the project: two very different cars united by the idea that even a small and inexpensive automobile can become distinctive through design, colour and personality. Together, Top. J and Top. L form part of GFG Style’s expanding programme of fully developed and constructed one-off vehicles in Turin.
