01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Michelotti Villedeuxmille was a full-scale design maquette presented by Studio Michelotti at the Turin Motor Show in 1990. Designed by Edgardo Michelotti, it proposed a compact enclosed car but was displayed as a non-functional model, without a documented running mechanical base. Its French name referred to the city of the year 2000. Contemporary reporting in MotorTrend’s August 1990 issue identified the proposal with Edgardo.

The model’s exterior combined a short nose with a tall cabin and a rounded tail. The windscreen rose steeply from the front body and met an arched roof, while dark side glazing formed a broad band around the upper part of the vehicle. Narrow dark pillars divided the side windows. At the rear, the roof descended towards the tail through a sloping glazed area, giving the cabin a continuous curved outline.

The front was largely smooth, with two outlined lamp covers set into the yellow body surface and a dark opening low in the centre. A horizontal joint separated the front panel from the lower nose. The sides carried two door outlines, small rectangular handles and a shallow sill, with rounded wheel openings at each end. Body-coloured wheel covers repeated the yellow finish and incorporated several curved openings around their edges. These visible details formed part of the displayed styling proposal; they do not establish the construction or operating mechanisms of a production car.

The Villedeuxmille belonged to the studio’s later period under Edgardo, who continued its activity after Giovanni Michelotti’s death in 1980. Giovanni’s earlier career and the continued use of the family name have sometimes obscured the authorship of the 1990 project. The period attribution identifies Edgardo as its designer, with Studio Michelotti responsible for the exhibited model.

The Turin display is recorded as the final exhibition project of the original studio’s activity. The object shown there was a maquette rather than a road-going prototype, and no series-production version followed. Engine output, transmission ratios and road performance are therefore not characteristics of the exhibited object. Its documented chronology ends with the 1990 presentation, rather than with a programme of customer deliveries or a recorded competition career.
