01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8, completed in 1923 with coachwork by Carrozzeria Garavini, belongs to the first generation of eight-cylinder automobiles produced by the Milanese manufacturer. Introduced in 1919, the Tipo 8 was among the earliest production cars powered by a straight-eight engine and established Isotta Fraschini’s reputation for advanced engineering and luxury construction in the immediate postwar period. The Tipo 8 chassis was designed as a high-end touring platform and supplied as a rolling chassis for bespoke coachbuilding. It was powered by an inline eight-cylinder engine with a displacement of approximately 5.9 litres, employing overhead valves and engineered for smoothness and flexibility rather than outright speed. Power output varied by specification but was sufficient to allow sustained high-speed touring, a key requirement for the marque’s clientele. The drivetrain consisted of a manual gearbox driving a live rear axle. Suspension was by semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear, and braking was mechanical on all four wheels, consistent with early-1920s practice. Garavini’s bodywork for the Tipo 8 followed contemporary luxury conventions of the early 1920s, combining restrained elegance with careful proportioning. Construction employed traditional coachbuilding techniques, using a wooden frame clothed in hand-formed metal panels. Attention was given to structural rigidity, panel fit, and surface finish. The design reflected transitional stylistic influences, incorporating early Art Deco elements while retaining prewar formality in its upright stance, long bonnet, and flowing fenders. The body emphasized visual balance between the engine compartment and passenger area, with minimal decorative excess. Brightwork was applied sparingly, allowing the form of the body to define its character. Interior execution followed bespoke practice, with fittings and upholstery specified according to the original client’s requirements, consistent with Isotta Fraschini’s position at the upper end of the market. The Tipo 8 Garavini of 1923 is recorded as a one-off commission, with no identical examples documented. Its singular construction reflects the highly individualized nature of luxury automobile production during the period, when manufacturers collaborated closely with independent coachbuilders to satisfy specific client demands.
