01 / THE STORY

History & context

Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Berlina Garavini was a 1930 Alfa Romeo coachbuilt by Garavini. The car combined the 6C 1750 mechanical basis with a closed berlina body. Garavini shaped the body with close attention to proportion and construction, creating a streamlined silhouette that complemented the car’s mechanical specification. Its styling followed contemporary automotive design trends while retaining design elements characteristic of Garavini’s work. The body gave the Alfa Romeo six-cylinder chassis an individual coachbuilt exterior treatment suited to the formal berlina form.

The car used an inline-six engine in a 6L configuration. Its chassis was designed to balance stability and agility, while the suspension was engineered for ride quality and responsive handling. These components formed the mechanical basis beneath the Garavini bodywork. The combination joined Alfa Romeo’s performance-oriented engineering with a separately built closed body, rather than a standard production exterior. The streamlined profile formed part of the body’s overall proportion, with its lines set against the longer mechanical layout of the 6C 1750.

Garavini built the body around the period’s developing ideas of automotive proportion and construction. The coachbuilder applied a streamlined form without abandoning the formal character of a berlina. The bodywork incorporated individual details from Garavini’s own craftsmanship, while the chassis, engine and suspension retained the Alfa Romeo mechanical arrangement. This relationship between a six-cylinder Alfa Romeo chassis and bespoke Italian bodywork defined the car’s specification. The Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Berlina Garavini brought together the coachbuilder’s exterior treatment and the established 6C 1750 mechanical basis in a single closed-body model.

Production of the 6C 1750 Berlina was limited, and historical archives record specific chassis numbers for the model. The car was shown at automotive exhibitions, where its body design and engineering attracted attention. Surviving examples are held in private collections and institutional archives. They preserve the combination of an inline-six Alfa Romeo chassis with Garavini’s berlina bodywork. Recorded chassis numbers and surviving cars provide material for research into early twentieth-century automotive design, Italian coachbuilding and the development of the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750.

The 1930 model remains represented by its recorded chassis numbers, exhibition appearances and surviving examples. Its bodywork centres on the streamlined silhouette, the considered proportions and the construction methods applied by Garavini. The mechanical specification centres on the inline-six engine, chassis and suspension arrangement, while the exterior retains the period character of a formal Alfa Romeo berlina. Garavini produced the bodywork for the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Berlina Garavini in limited numbers.
