01 / THE STORY

History & context

Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Spider Garavini was a 1928 Spider built by Garavini on the Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 mechanical basis. Its body combined the low, sporting proportions expected of the 6C series with a streamlined late-1920s silhouette. Garavini shaped the coachwork by traditional methods, giving the car an open body with carefully formed panels and a strong emphasis on line. The design brought Alfa Romeo engineers and Garavini together in the development of the body proportions and the placement of its mechanical components.

The 6C 1500 provided the chassis and inline-six engine. Its chassis was designed for agility and speed, while the engine installation formed a central part of the car’s balance and weight distribution. The suspension was advanced for its period and was intended to provide stability and comfort over varied road conditions. These mechanical features gave the Spider a sporting basis beneath its individually coachbuilt body.

Garavini’s work concentrated on the relationship between the long mechanical platform and the compact open passenger compartment. The body retained the streamlined character of the period without abandoning the practical requirements of a road-going sports car. Its shaped panels and restrained proportions placed craftsmanship at the centre of the car’s construction. The Spider combined the established 6C 1500 chassis with a distinct Garavini interpretation rather than a standard production body.

Only a limited number of Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Spider Garavini cars were produced. The model appeared at various exhibitions, where its body design and engineering were presented to contemporary audiences. Surviving examples remain in private collections and institutional archives, where they provide physical reference material for the study of early Italian coachbuilding.

The Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Spider Garavini belongs to the period in which the 6C series developed Alfa Romeo’s sporting road-car range. Its combination of an inline-six chassis, advanced suspension and Garavini-built coachwork brought mechanical and stylistic elements together in a single open-bodied car. The limited production of this Spider has made surviving examples valuable to collectors and historians of Italian automotive design.

Garavini built the Spider as a distinct coachbuilt version of the Alfa Romeo 6C 1500. The car’s exhibition appearances recorded its presentation as both a design and engineering achievement, while surviving examples preserve the shaped bodywork and traditional construction methods used for the model. These cars continue to document the craftsmanship of Italian automotive design in the late 1920s.

The 1928 production year places this Alfa Romeo within the formative years of the 6C 1500. Its open Spider body, Garavini coachwork, inline-six engine and limited manufacture define the model, while surviving examples remain preserved in private collections and institutional archives for research and reference purposes. The model was produced in limited numbers.
