01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A SS, completed in 1924 with coachwork by Stabilimenti Farina, represents an early and performance-oriented interpretation of Isotta Fraschini’s flagship chassis. The car was commissioned by Count Carlo Felice Trossi, an Italian aristocrat, racing driver, and industrial figure closely associated with advanced automotive projects during the interwar period. Introduced in 1924, the Tipo 8A was engineered as Isotta Fraschini’s top-tier offering and supplied exclusively as a rolling chassis for bespoke coachbuilding. The SS designation (Super Spinto) identified a more highly tuned configuration intended for lighter bodies and improved dynamic performance. The chassis was powered by a 7,370 cc inline eight-cylinder engine with overhead valves and an aluminium crankcase. Early Super Spinto specifications delivered output in the region of 135 horsepower, emphasizing smooth torque delivery and sustained high-speed capability rather than outright acceleration. Power was transmitted through a three-speed manual gearbox to a live rear axle. The chassis incorporated four-wheel servo-assisted mechanical drum brakes, a technically advanced feature for the period, along with semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear. The long wheelbase provided stability and allowed the use of both formal and sporting body styles. Suspension tuning balanced ride comfort with road-holding, consistent with the expectations of elite owner-drivers such as Trossi. Stabilimenti Farina’s coachwork for the Tipo 8A SS reflected early-1920s Italian luxury design, with careful attention to proportion and surface continuity. The body adopted a restrained yet purposeful appearance, with a long bonnet, flowing fenders, and a compact passenger compartment. Construction followed traditional methods, employing a wooden frame clad in hand-formed metal panels. Decorative elements were limited, aligning with the more sporting character implied by the Super Spinto specification. The combination of a lighter body and uprated mechanicals distinguished this SS from more formal Tipo 8A executions. The car illustrates Farina’s early approach to integrating elegance with functional clarity before the firm’s later evolution toward more streamlined forms.
