01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Cisitalia 505 DF (Derivazione Fiat) represents the final and only production-oriented outcome of the broader 808X program. After the termination of the proposed collaboration with Ford, Piero and Carlo Dusio elected to preserve the coupé concept by adapting it to a European industrial context. Rather than abandon the design developed for the 808X prototypes, Cisitalia chose to transfer it intact onto a Fiat mechanical base, creating a car that could be produced in very limited numbers without reliance on American components. The 505 DF directly derives from the 808X coupé design by Aldo Brovarone, previously realized as the Ghia-bodied prototype on the bespoke X-frame and subsequently as a Vignale-bodied coupé on a Ford chassis. Unlike the Vignale cabriolet—a separate design by Giovanni Michelotti—the 505 DF retained the exact same closed coupé body design conceived by Brovarone, without stylistic reinterpretation. Carrozzeria Ghia was again responsible for body construction, ensuring continuity between the prototype and production phases. Mechanically, the 505 DF was based on the Fiat 1900 chassis and drivetrain, which offered a modern and readily available foundation. Fiat’s 1,901 cc inline four-cylinder engine was extensively modified by Cisitalia. Upgrades included a revised alloy cylinder head, twin Weber 34 DR6 carburettors mounted on a Cisitalia manifold, and reworked camshaft, pistons, and exhaust system, in line with contemporary Abarth tuning practices. Power output increased to approximately 80–85 horsepower at 5,500 rpm, allowing a top speed of around 160 km/h. Transmission was via a four-speed manual gearbox equipped with an overdrive unit. Braking was provided by finned aluminum drum brakes, reinforcing the car’s grand touring orientation. The first Cisitalia 505 DF was presented in March 1953 at the Geneva Auto Salon, finished in a light color and without hood or side moldings. A second example appeared in April 1953 at the Salone Internazionale dell’Automobile di Torino, this time in a darker color and fitted with a hood molding. Period photographs from Turin show additional variations in finish, indicating that detailing was not standardized. Chassis records indicate that no more than ten examples were built. Of these, three cars are known to survive, corresponding to chassis numbers 00205, 00209, and 00210. Variations among the surviving cars confirm the semi-bespoke nature of production. The 505 DF stands as Cisitalia’s final attempt to evolve from experimental prototypes into limited manufacturing while preserving the original 808X design identity.
