01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Chevrolet Corvette Moray is a concept car developed by Italdesign and presented in 2003. It is built on the chassis and mechanical base of the Chevrolet Corvette, retaining the front-mounted longitudinal V8 engine layout. The engine has a displacement of approximately six litres and produces more than 400 hp. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through the Corvette’s production drivetrain. The wheelbase measures 2,660 mm, with overall dimensions of about 4,540 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width and 1,235 mm in height. The Moray features bodywork constructed specifically for the concept, characterised by a continuous, uninterrupted profile. Surfaces are shaped with long horizontal tension lines inspired by wave forms. The headlights are narrow, elongated units integrated into the tapering front structure, and this element, together with the fluid overall silhouette, informs the “Moray” designation. The front section adopts a low bonnet and recessed intakes, while the rear incorporates a cut-off tail with integrated lighting strips. A primary structural feature is the door window half dome. This component serves simultaneously as the side glazing and roof section. Each unit opens via a gullwing mechanism hinged at the rear pillar, providing access to the cabin without the presence of conventional door frames. The canopy-style glazing eliminates typical A- and B-pillar visibility obstructions. Auxiliary side mirrors are replaced by external cameras, with corresponding displays integrated into the interior. The vehicle rides on large-diameter alloy wheels with Michelin tyres sized 335/30 ZR20 at the rear. The suspension, braking systems and steering geometry reflect those of the underlying Corvette platform, with calibration adjusted to the concept’s weight distribution and aerodynamic characteristics. The interior uses a dual-cockpit layout with leather trim supplied in collaboration with Dräxlmaier. Instrumentation and controls follow the Corvette mechanical configuration while adopting Italdesign-specific surfaces and fittings. Two built, one blue and one red.
