01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Porsche 914 Coupé Eurostyle was a one-off coachbuilt car based on the Porsche 914/6R. It was designed by Count Albrecht von Goertz and built by the Turin coachbuilder Eurostyle. The car was presented at the 1970 Turin Motor Show. The project modified the standard Porsche 914 body with a fixed coupé roof and a redesigned rear section. The original targa arrangement was replaced by an extended roofline flowing into sloping rear pillars. This gave the car a shooting-brake profile, with a more enclosed and formal appearance than the production 914. The front end was also changed. The nose was lower and more pointed, with smoother surfaces and a more compact frontal treatment. The side profile was defined by the fixed roof, the long rear quarter panels and the continuous line from windscreen to tail. The rear body was more substantial than on the standard car, giving the design a different balance and a stronger grand touring character. The design work was carried out by Albrecht von Goertz, known for the BMW 507. Eurostyle built the finished car from Goertz’s drawings and model. The car was shown as a design exercise and did not lead to production. The base vehicle was a Porsche 914/6R, a competition-oriented version of the 914 with six-cylinder Porsche mechanicals. The 914/6R and 914/6 GT were linked to Porsche’s early-1970s racing programme, including the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours. The Porsche 914 Coupé Eurostyle remained a single example. Goertz later donated the car to the Langenburg Automobile Museum in Germany. It is recorded as a rare coachbuilt interpretation of the Porsche 914 and one of the few Porsche-related projects designed by Albrecht von Goertz and built in Italy.
