01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat Hidalgo 1000 was a strikingly low and sporty coupé that stood out as a bold alternative to the Fiat 850 Coupé of the second series, designed by Eurostyle. Built on the Fiat 850 platform, it showcased innovative design elements and performance enhancements that made it a standout concept during its time. The most notable upgrade was its engine, which was enlarged to a 1.0-liter capacity, delivering improved performance while staying true to the compact car’s spirited character. One of the most unique and eye-catching aspects of the Fiat Hidalgo 1000 was its elongated hood, accentuated by rectangular headlights set close together under large acrylic glass covers. This distinctive feature gave the car a futuristic and sleek appearance, setting it apart from the more traditional designs of the late 1960s. The overall styling was both elegant and aggressive, embodying the essence of a sporty, avant-garde coupé. Making its public debut at the 1968 Turin Motor Show, the Hidalgo 1000 captured attention for its innovative design and dynamic proportions. Its low-slung profile and unique front-end styling hinted at a new direction for sporty compact cars. Despite the enthusiastic reception, the Hidalgo 1000 remained a one-off prototype, never making it to production. As a fascinating concept that showcased the creative potential of the Fiat 850 platform, the Fiat Hidalgo reflected the daring design language of the late 1960s. It embodied the era’s penchant for bold, forward-thinking automotive innovation. Though it never saw the light of mass production, the Hidalgo is admired for its striking aesthetics and visionary design.
