01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 1100 S Coupé Mille Miglia is a remarkable chapter in Fiat’s post-war return to motorsport, offering a perfect blend of performance, style, and engineering. Produced between 1947 and 1950, only 401 units of this racing coupe were built, making it a rare gem among Fiat’s models of the time. Designed by the legendary Dante Giacosa and assembled by Fiat’s in-house coachbuilder, “Carrozzerie Speciali,” the 1100 S showcased striking design elements that were influenced by the famous Mille Miglia racers. This model marked a departure from conventional designs with its aerodynamic body, which featured a lack of bumpers and rear-faired wheels, giving the car a streamlined, racing-inspired look. These design elements not only contributed to its visual appeal but also enhanced its performance by reducing drag, making it more suited for high-speed racing events. Under the hood, the Fiat 1100 S was powered by an engine derived from the Cisitalia 202, delivering 51 horsepower, a significant upgrade from its predecessors. This power enabled the car to reach a top speed of 150 km/h, providing a thrilling driving experience that matched its aggressive design. Its handling and acceleration made it a formidable competitor in the racing world, where it proved its mettle during the famous Mille Miglia race. In the 1948 edition of the Mille Miglia, the Fiat 1100 S secured an impressive 3rd place finish, validating its engineering prowess and establishing it as a force to be reckoned with. The 1100 S’s success in this iconic event cemented its place in automotive history, showcasing Fiat’s commitment to innovation and performance during a pivotal period for the company. As a limited-production model with strong racing credentials, the Fiat 1100 S Coupé Mille Miglia stands today as a symbol of Fiat’s post-war renaissance, capturing the spirit of Italian automotive excellence.
