01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Stanguellini 1100 Sport Barchetta Ala d’Oro was a limited-production sports car constructed in the immediate postwar period, combining Stanguellini mechanical preparation with coachwork by Carrozzeria Ala d’Oro of Reggio Emilia. Developed between 1947 and 1949, the model was based on the Fiat 1100 platform and intended for use in Italian sports car racing events in the under-1100 cc category. The mechanical configuration employed a front-mounted, inline four-cylinder engine derived from the Fiat 1100 S unit. Stanguellini’s modifications included higher compression, revised intake and exhaust systems, and tuning for increased output. Displacement remained approximately 1,089 cubic centimetres. Power output was estimated at 45 horsepower, transmitted to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. The chassis retained independent front suspension with transverse leaf spring and a live rear axle located by semi-elliptical leaf springs. Braking was by drums on all four wheels. The coachwork was executed in lightweight aluminium by Carrozzeria Ala d’Oro, founded in 1947 by Franco Bertani. The barchetta body configuration featured pontoon-style fenders, a curved grille with vertical and horizontal elements, and a recessed central headlamp. The cockpit was open, with accommodation for two occupants and minimal weather protection. The design was characterised by its streamlined form and simplicity, consistent with contemporary Italian sports racing vehicles. Production of the Stanguellini 1100 Sport with Ala d’Oro bodywork was extremely limited. Available records suggest that between five and eight examples were constructed, comprising both barchetta and berlinetta variants. The majority were based on modified Fiat 1100 chassis. Chassis numbers are not comprehensively documented. One known example participated in the 1949 Mille Miglia, entered by Scuderia Stanguellini and driven by Luigi Montanari and Francesco Nissotti. The Stanguellini 1100 Sport Barchetta Ala d’Oro represents a convergence of small-displacement motorsport engineering and lightweight artisanal body construction. It reflects the postwar Italian practice of reinterpreting production mechanicals through specialist preparation and coachbuilding, often for competitive purposes. Its rarity, competition history, and distinctive styling contribute to its recognition as a notable example within the early Italian sports car tradition.
