01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 1100 Sport Berlinetta Ala d’Oro was a limited-production, coachbuilt competition car constructed between 1947 and 1949 by Carrozzeria Ala d’Oro of Reggio Emilia. The vehicle was based on mechanical components derived from the Fiat 1100 S and employed a body designed and fabricated using techniques derived from wartime aircraft construction. The model name references both the lightweight alloy bodywork (“ala,” meaning wing) and the firm’s designation (“d’Oro,” meaning golden), consistent with the coachbuilder’s naming conventions. The chassis employed the Fiat 1100 S platform with modifications to improve rigidity and accommodate bespoke bodywork. The engine was a Fiat 1,089 cc inline four-cylinder unit with side valves in the standard form, though most vehicles prepared for sporting use received tuning by Stanguellini of Modena. These modifications typically included upgraded camshaft, higher-compression pistons, and twin carburettors, producing an estimated output in the range of 50 to 60 horsepower. The powertrain remained front-mounted with rear-wheel drive, coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox. Suspension consisted of independent front wheels with coil springs and a live rear axle with semi-elliptical leaf springs. Braking was by mechanically actuated drums. The bodywork was fabricated in aluminium and formed by hand. The berlinetta configuration featured an enclosed two-seat coupé design, with a distinct fastback roofline, pontoon-style front wings, and a narrow front grille. Certain variants included a removable hardtop or rear window design with segmented glazing. Styling and coachwork were executed in-house by Ala d’Oro; no named designer is recorded in period documentation. Production was limited. Surviving records indicate at least five examples of the berlinetta variant were built, alongside several open-bodied barchetta variants. One known chassis, Fiat 508 S no. 043454, is documented as receiving Ala d’Oro berlinetta bodywork. A vehicle of this configuration was entered in the 1947 Mille Miglia under the Stanguellini name, driven by Alberico Cacciari, but did not finish. Ownership histories are incomplete; several examples are known to survive in private collections. The Fiat 1100 Sport Berlinetta Ala d’Oro is representative of post-war Italian coachbuilding that combined series-production mechanicals with aeronautically influenced hand-built bodies in limited quantities for competition and exhibition purposes.
