01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 508C Barchetta Morelli based on a 1939 Fiat 508C chassis later reconfigured in the 1950s with a barchetta body constructed by Carrozzeria Morelli of Ferrara. The Morelli coachwork follows the small-displacement Italian sports-racer idiom of the early postwar period: a lightweight open body, faired fenders integrated into a single envelope, and a rounded front fascia with an oval grille aperture. The hood incorporates two raised air channels, typical of artisanal competition bodies intended for improved carburetor ventilation. This example displayed at 2025 Milano AutoClassica carries period-type steel wheels and a low wraparound windscreen. “Morelli Ferrara” badging is visible on the flank, confirming the carrozzeria’s authorship. The side features a twin-stripe graphic reminiscent of contemporary privateer livery practices. Headlamp placement, grille proportions, and the general surfacing correspond to Morelli’s work on small sports bodies of the early 1950s. The original 508C powertrain was replaced during the rebodying with a Fiat 1100S unit tuned by Stanguellini, a common performance upgrade for private competition cars using prewar Fiat underpinnings. This mechanical configuration situates the car within the large group of specials constructed in Italy during the immediate postwar decade, combining earlier chassis with updated engines and custom lightweight coachwork.

Production notes
Independent restoration history confirms a postwar Fiat 508C transformation with Morelli bodywork and Stanguellini engine work; Auta5P dates the Morelli Barchetta configuration to 1952. Retain canonical year 1939 for donor-chassis identity and record 1952 as conversion/body phase. Exact chassis, exact rebody date and total quantity remain open. NO_AUTO_INHERIT.
