01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Talbot-Maserati Campana emerges from the annals of motorsport history as a testament to the convergence of engineering prowess and racing ambition. Born from the fusion of Talbot and Maserati expertise, these racing specials, powered by the formidable 2,493cc straight-6 Maserati 250F engine, made a formidable impression at the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans on July 28th, 1956. Among the racing elite, the example piloted by Jean Behra and Louis Rosier soared into third place, demonstrating remarkable endurance as it completed 220 laps. However, fate dealt a cruel blow as transmission issues forced its untimely retirement a mere three hours before the race’s conclusion, denying it a podium finish. Subsequently acquired by the legendary Andre Dubonnet, French flying ace and racing aficionado, both cars underwent a transformative metamorphosis under the skilled hands of Carrozzeria Campana of Modena. Sporting new coachwork and adorned with race numbers 22 and 23, they returned to the hallowed grounds of Le Mans in 1957, poised for redemption. Amidst high expectations, car number 22, slated for Jean Blanc and Georges Burggraff, faltered at the starting line, succumbing to mechanical woes before it could embark on its racing odyssey. Meanwhile, the illustrious car number 23, previously helmed by Behra and Rosier, found itself under the charge of Bruce Halford and Franco Halford for Ecurie Dubonnet. Yet, despite their valiant efforts, misfortune struck once more as transmission failure prematurely halted the Campana-clad Talbot-Maserati Campana ‘s charge, dashing hopes of a triumphant return. Though denied victory, their legacy endures as a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence and the unpredictable nature of motorsport’s grand stage.
